After the morning briefing, we head north through the back of Chiang Mai to the to where our first stop will be Thailand’s highest hot springs for coffee and refreshments.
Leaving our stop we head east on the most incredible sweeping curved road that takes us up in the mountains. There we have a brief stop at Tarn Thong Waterfall before moving on to our lunch stop on the beautiful Lake Phayao.
The afternoon’s ride takes us through back roads and small villages up into the mountains on exhilarating roads that take us to our overnight stop in the rural town of Nan.
After a chance to relax and a dip in the pool we head into town for our dinner where we will enjoy a great meal with our friend a celebrity chef and a chance to talk about our days ride.
Today is the longest and most challenging riding day along where we take many different road types before finishing in Chiang Khong which is on the banks of the mighty Mekong River.
Our first stop today is the large Reclining Buddha which provides a great chance for a photo opportunity before riding one of the world’s best roads this road has so many challenges with switch backs, hairpin corners and magnificent views – this is an unforgettable riding experience.
After lunch we head along small country roads to breath-taking mountainous views of Phu Chee Fah. This mountain road allows you to follow the ridges providing magnificent views of the valleys and farmlands below. It is also the home of the Hmong people, a farming tribe, who live on these mountains.
We descend from Phu Chee Fah and ride along the low lands past rice fields and farms until we reach the Mekong River running between Thailand and Laos. Traveling along beside this river we will find our overnight stop, the town of Chiang Khong. This also a border town which has a crossing to the country of Laos. Another great days ride with more good stories to tell at tonight’s restaurant.
This morning we head to the famous Golden Triangle, this is the place on the Mekong where Thailand, Myanmar/Burma and Laos meet and was home of the Infamous Opium trade. Our stop at the Opium Museum, a remarkably interesting place, provides a glimpse into how it transpired.
We then ride to the northern point of Thailand, the border town Mae Sai. This is a bustling trading border town between Thailand and Myanmar/Burma with goods and produce crossing at this border.
We leave the tip of Thailand and head up on a small road riding a mountain ridge with Myanmar/ Burma on one side. There is spectacular scenery to the left and right looking down the valleys of both countries as we head towards the Chinese Village of Doi Mae Salong. This spectacular bustling little town situated way up in the mountains and dates back to the Chinese Communist Revolution (A great story I will tell you about on tour).
After leaving Doi Mae Salong we head to our overnight stop in the city of Chiang Rai, an exciting place where there is always much to see and do.
Our first stop this morning is the beautiful White Temple Wat Rong Khun. This temple really put Chiang Rai on the map and is a stunning piece of architecture with a very peculiar twist.
The next stop will be high in the mountains where coffee is grown. Thai coffee is exceptionally good and sold all over Thailand and here we get a chance to enjoy Thailand’s finest coffee straight from the area it’s grown in.
We leave the coffee growing area and ride down the mountain ridges allowing, once again, to witness the beautiful scenery on both sides of the road far into the distance. While traveling these quiet winding mountain roads, with great twists and curves, we head to one of the most beautiful unforgettable night stop. Here, deep in the Mountains of Chiang Dao a unique beautiful place you will always remember and the perfect place to spend our last night.
